Usually a dynamite deadlift, Makarov also has impressive upper body power.
Throughout his long career as a strongman, Ivan Makarov was acclaimed for his ability to do one thing at a rare and high level – deadlift staggering amounts of weight. Like the 2021 Deadlift World Champion (WDC), a majority of Makarov’s recent career competitive appearances have largely focused on the deadlift, and his current social media primarily features the athlete’s latest pulling progress. An exception would be his commitment to Unity is strength.
On November 9, 2022, Makarov shared footage of himself successfully locking down a strict 190-kilogram (418.9-pound) overhead press with a dumbbell. According to the strongman’s post, the lift is a personal best (PR). Makarov wore wrist guards, elbow guards and a lifting belt to help with the personal milestone.
This overhead press isn’t the first time Makarov has challenged his upper body about once a week this fall. The coaching the concentration seems to be part of a pursuit for the world record of the representatives of the air press. (Note: As of this writing, it’s unclear when and where Makarov intends to break the current mark, or where the rep number currently stands.)
For example, with the same wrist and elbow setup, Makarov showed up completing a 140-kilogram (308.6-pound) overhead press for eight reps in mid-October 2022. About a week later, Makarov pressed 170 kilograms (374.8 pounds). pounds) for two repetitions. Two weeks ago, he managed to complete 160 kilograms (352.7 pounds) in six repetitions. This kind of commitment paid off in Makarov by placing himself within striking distance of the elite company. If he managed to lift at least that much weight in a sanctioned competition, Makarov would become only the third strongman to lift 500 kilograms. Notably, Makarov attempted to officially surpass Björnsson’s all-time world record deadlift of 501 kilograms (1,104.5 pounds) from the May 2020 edition of the World’s Ultimate Strongman (WUS) series “Feats of Strength». Makarov attempted to lift 502 kilograms (1,106.7 pounds) in the October 2020 iteration of the WUS Feats of Strength series, but was unsuccessful. Makarov most recently made an unsuccessful attempt by shooting 505 kilograms (1,113.3 pounds) at the Giants Live World Open 2021.
Makarov is at a point where many eyes will be on him and his loaded bar every time he lifts the dirt. It looks like he’s preparing for a future where he’ll soon be famous for his aerial prowess.
