Minister of Foreign Affairs S Jaishankar met with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Delhi. The meeting was also attended by the United Arab Emirates Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy and Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra.
The Foreign Ministers appreciated the progress in bilateral relations, particularly in trade, investment, consular matters, education and food security, and discussed the expansion of the partnership in these sectors, officials said.
The Ministers noted that bilateral trade has experienced significant growth under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which came into force on May 1. India’s exports to the UAE from April to September rose 24% yoy to $16 billion, while Indian imports rose 38% yoy to $28.4 billion of dollars. On food security cooperation within the framework of I2U2 (India-Israel-United States-UAE), a delegation led by the CEO of the ADQ visited India in October to advance discussions with different stakeholders. IIT Delhi held meetings with its Abu Dhabi partner, ADEK, for the establishment of the IIT Delhi campus in Abu Dhabi.
The two sides continued their discussions on other areas of cooperation, including energy, health, defense, space, climate change, skills, fintech and startups.
On Tuesday, the foreign ministers also exchanged views on the global situation and various regional hotspots as well as cooperation between the two countries in the United Nations Security Council. India and the United Arab Emirates are currently non-permanent members of the UNSC.
The two countries are also discussing the use of IPU as a payment platform for remittances from the 3.5 million strong Indian community in the UAE.
As part of I2U2, the two countries are discussing an investment of $2 billion from the United Arab Emirates to develop food corridors in India and another $300 million for the construction of a hybrid power plant (wind and solar). ) of 300 GW. The United Arab Emirates has been invited to participate in the G20 summit as a special guest.
