“The UAE has no interest in choosing sides between the major powers,” Gargash told pundits and analysts at the Abu Dhabi Strategic Debate Conference, without naming any countries.

Gargash said the UAE, a regional power, welcomes “constructive and collaborative engagement” with world powers other than the United States to promote security and stability in the region.
The UAE does not “depend on just one or two countries for our economic prosperity and security”, said Gargash, who previously served as minister of state for foreign affairs.
“Commercial relations are increasingly looking East while our main security and investment relations (are) in the West,” he added, explaining that the “situation may change with the time”.
UAE Ambassador to Washington Yousef al-Otaiba said he was “proud of the influence and good reputation of the UAE in the United States”.
Gargash stressed that “Abu Dhabi’s primary strategic security relationship remains unequivocal with the United States,” but called for clearer commitments from American partners.
“It is vital that we find a way to ensure that we can rely on this relationship for decades to come, through clear commitments,” he said.
