EXPERT POINT OF VIEW — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday opened the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China with a speech it makes it clear where his party stands on its future ambitions, including the reunification of the self-governing island of Taiwan.
Xi, who is expected to seek an unprecedented third term as party leader, said: “We will continue to strive for peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and utmost effort, but we will never promise to give up the use of force, and reserves the right to take all necessary measures. The cogs of history revolve around the reunification of China and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The complete reunification of our country must be achieved, and it can, without a doubt, be achieved.
