AL AIN, 26th November, 2022 (WAM) — The College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at the United Arab Emirates University has launched an awareness campaign titled “Food Waste Audit”, in cooperation with the Associate Provost’s Office for research and involvement of the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center (Tadweer) and several local institutions.

Activities began at the university’s student food court, attended by Professor Ahmed Murad, Vice Rector for Research, Dr. Mohammed Abdul Muhsen Al-Yafei, Vice Dean of the College of Agriculture and Medicine veterinarian, and several university staff and students.

Dr Nuha Mustafa, a professor at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, who oversees the campaign’s programme, said the campaign is based on research studies aimed at limiting waste and food consumption. The outreach program targets schools and universities to educate students about the need to reduce food waste. Studies in the food court have shown that more than 50 kilograms of different foods are wasted daily at breakfast and lunch, resulting in wastage of these foods and beverages, as the students obviously bought more than food than they need and consume.

She added that the campaign aims to create a sustainable environment on campus and to identify and recycle waste in sustainable environment projects, and to transform the university campus into an environmentally friendly campus. In addition, competitions and student research programs on this issue will be conducted which require awareness and new culture in light of the changing society and changing eating habits.
