DHAKA, 25th November, 2022 (WAM) — The United Arab Emirates participated in the 22nd Meeting of the Council of Ministers (COM) of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the 24th Meeting of the Committee of Senior Officials (CSO) held in Dhaka, People’s Republic of Bangladesh, from 22 to 24 November.
The UAE delegation was led by Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, Minister of State, and included Dr. Abdulnasser Al Shaali, UAE Ambassador to India, and Abdullah Ali Al Hamoudi, UAE Ambassador to Bangladesh.
During the meetings, which were chaired by Bangladesh and held under the theme “Harnessing the Opportunities of the Indian Ocean in a Sustainable Manner for Inclusive Development”, the UAE affirmed its commitment to promoting inclusive growth and prosperity. in the Indian Ocean region, as well as their continued support for IORA’s essential role as the region’s premier multilateral body.
In line with the UAE’s commitment to supporting IORA and the Indian Ocean region, the launch of the Sheikh Zayed IORA Humanitarian and Development Fellowship has been officially announced.
This initiative will award scholarships to young professionals from IORA Member States in the Masters program at the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy in Abu Dhabi.
The Sheikh Zayed IORA Humanitarian and Development Fellowship is a tribute to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s commitment to enhancing human development and sustainable growth globally.
The United Arab Emirates joined IORA in 1999 and chaired the organization between 2019 and 2021. IORA was established in 1997 to promote regional cooperation, prosperity and growth in the Indian Ocean region through joint action in areas such as maritime safety and security, trade and investment, fisheries management, disaster risk management, tourism and cultural exchanges, academic, scientific and technological cooperation, women’s economic empowerment and blue economy.
